Engraved on the facade, the dates 1818 and 1838 say it all: this mayen has witnessed two centuries of Alpine life. Perched at an altitude of 1,699 m, on the edge of the forest, it looks out over the valley and the peaks of the Val de Bagnes just as it did on the very first day. A rare find, sold for what it is—an authentic mountain retreat, not a promise of renovation.
The Mayen du Tseppi is a traditional mayen built of larch logs, weathered by two hundred years of sun and snow, topped with corrugated sheet metal in the rust-colored hues characteristic of the Bagnes alpine pastures. Inside, a large living area of approximately 36 m² with original flooring and paneling, heated by a magnificent wood-burning stove. Kerosene lamps hanging from the beams, a family table, and an old wooden basin: the soul of the place remains intact.
In front of the mayen is a fountain basin and a fenced-in meadow of 1,000 m², facing due south. The view opens unobstructed onto the valley, the spruce forests, and the ring of mountain peaks. Here, there are no neighbors, no roads, and no noise—silence is the centerpiece.
Access is on foot, about a 10-minute walk from the farm road overlooking the chalet, which is precisely what gives this place its charm and value: you come here to unwind, not just to arrive. The roof has excellent solar potential (class 4/5 according to toitsolaire.ch), making it feasible to achieve basic electrical self-sufficiency with solar panels.
A place you have to earn
You don’t stumble upon the Mayen du Tseppi by chance, and that’s just fine. In summer, a drivable alpine road winds from Bruson through forests and clearings: allow about thirty minutes from Le Châble, windows open, at the mountain’s own pace. A high-clearance vehicle is recommended. The last ten minutes are on foot, along a trail that leads to the meadow and its pond—exactly the time it takes to leave the valley behind.
Outside of the tourist season, the road isn’t plowed: the mayen can then be reached on foot or by snowshoes, depending on snow conditions—just as its builders once did.
